Important Update: Communication with MCFD Early Years

Dear Members,

In March, we conducted a survey asking for your insights on what the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) should know about our sector.

The response to the survey was exceptional, breaking all of FRP-BC’s previous records. Within just 2.5 hours, we received input from 27 communities/agencies across the province. This overwhelming participation underscores the significance and urgency of improving communication with MCFD Early Years.

I presented this feedback to the MCFD Early Years Leadership in March. The themes identified in the survey results may not come as a surprise to you:

1. Workforce Capacity and Staffing Challenges – including recruitment, retention, and competition for qualified workers.

2. Funding – It’s challenging to disentangle funding from the issue of significantly heightened needs, a concern that was echoed in nearly every response. It was also evident that not all DOOs are as familiar with contract needs and FRP programming.

3. Increased Vulnerability of Families – Agencies are seeing more and more families that require a deep level of support with complex needs.

4. Resources, Visibility, and Focus on Childcare – which everyone deemed as important but not instead of resources and focus on Family Resource Programs and services to families.

In May, I will be sharing these findings at a meeting with all the Directors of Operations (DOOs) province wide.

I want to thank all of you for taking the time to complete this survey. If you would like to provide any more information, please feel free to email me directly.

Thank you for your ongoing support and participation. It is deeply appreciated.

Kindly,

Tara Nargang

Provincial Director
