FRP staff use positive approaches and interactions to guide group and individual behaviour.

Benchmark Quality Indicators

  • FRP has participant guidelines that promote positive approaches and interactions posted in the facility.
  • Staff ensure confidentiality and encourage group agreements.
  • Staff recognize that listening to a frustrated parent is often more important than giving advice.
  • Staff has a clear understanding of how to provide support while maintaining a professional relationship with parents.
  • Staff welcomes each new arrival whenever possible.
  • Agency has positive discipline guidelines for parents posted on a large sign in the facility. Examples of content:
    • corporal punishment;
    • interventions that involve withholding nutrition or hydration, or that inflict physical or psychological pain;
    • isolation;
    • ignoring the child;
    • group punishment for individual behaviour;
    • labelling a child ‘good’ or ‘bad’;
    • the use of demeaning, shaming or degrading language or activities;
    • punitive overuse of time outs.

Innovation and Promising Practices

  • FRP has a Discipline Policy.
  • FRP has a participant agreement outlining respectful interactions with families.
  • FRP goes over group etiquette regularly and/or posts guidelines in the facility.
  • FRP has a clear descriptive outline on recognizing professional levels of support, how to maintain professional relationships, and a policy on how to  document unique strengths and needs of each family.
