"To help early childhood educators engage Indigenous voices and develop practices to incorporate Indigenous worldviews into their programs, the BC Council for Families has developed a new workshop in partnership with UBC Child Care Services. ECEs are invited to join with an open mind and heart to reflect on the continual influences of colonization and share how this has affected them personally and professionally.
"The course will explore how educators can develop pedagogy and practices that are post-developmental, situated in land-based knowledges, and incorporate Indigenous worldviews in culturally respectful ways, as well as, appropriate steps to take when connecting with local Indigenous community members."

Description: This workshop will focus on the myriad of possible contributors impacting a child's ability to self-regulate. Interested participants will be involved in the day to day care for young children: Early Childhood Educators, Family Care Providers, Parents, Counsellors, Mental Health Practitioners.
Participants will learn current theory involving the developmental needs of young children and the essential role caregivers provide in supporting a child's capacity to self-regulate. In particular, we will focus on difficult to understand behaviors and plausible causes for them. Participants will also gain access to tools and strategies to use that will support the development of all children.
Madelaine Hittos currently teaches in the Early Learning and Care program at Camosun College and with the University of British Columba. She also works as a Child, Youth and Family Mental Health counsellor at the Queen Alexandra Centre. Her interests are focused on how educators, caregivers and society and co-constructs the child's sense of themselves.
Caregivers and educators play an important role in supporting children and youth to be successful in managing stress. How well an individual is able to manage stress will contribute to their life-long resilience. Throughout this course, we will explore what contributes to self-regulation and the ability to manage stress, and how this relates to temperament, sensory processing and executive functioning skills. We will also focus on practical skills for working with children who struggle to regulate their emotions and who appear to have difficult . Many skills are required before a child is able to consistently manage their own while also sustaining healthy relationships with others. Each unit is designed to allow you either a brief introduction to the topics and ideas, as well as the opportunity to deepen your learning and understanding.
Unit One will focus on the importance of executive functioning skills and how these skills support self-regulation and problem-solving. We will also explore resilience, and how this relates to executive functioning skills. You will also be introduced to the idea of toxic stress and how this can impair a child's healthy development.
Unit Two is focused on temperament and sensory processing and how these shape a child’s perceptions and how they manage stress. We will also start to explore Izard’s emotion theory and the importance of responding to children's in a manner that supports how they regulate their emotions and how they understand themselves in regards to their emotional responses.
Unit Three explores children’s as communication and how caregivers can build self-awareness and resilience by recognizing the child’s as the child’s voice. We will discuss why it is important to pay attention to the child’s voice in relation to their developing sense of themselves, and how to develop children's spoken voice in a manner that respects as another form of communication.
Unit Four will focus on practical strategies and tools for self-regulation and builds a child's emotional vocabulary and insight into their own .
In order to complete the eight hours towards professional development you are required to:

Dr Erika Cheng
Dr. Erika Cheng is a family physician who delivers inpatient, outpatient and emergency medical care, and teaches students, residents, and fellow healthcare providers. Dr Cheng’s special interests include Post-Traumatic Stress and Dissociation, Suicide Prevention, the promotion of Trauma-Informed Care and Cultural Competency in Health Care, and the strengthening of community-based knowledge on healing from Trauma.
Dr Cheng is also a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia; is Co-Chair of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority’s Trauma-Informed Practice Steering Committee; and has given numerous presentations to Indigenous and Non-Indigenous healthcare providers, teachers, and youth on the subject of reaching past the cycle of trauma.
Jan White is currently Director of Early Years Policy and Programs with the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
Prior to this, Jan’s career began over 25 years ago working as an early childhood educator then working with various governments both in Canada and abroad managing cross ministry initiatives in communities including; Ontario’s School-based Child Care Initiative, Sure Start Wales, Early Learning in School Districts and Success by 6. When not ‘engaging on behalf of government’ Jan enjoys spending time with her family being active in our beautiful province.
Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, R. Psych
Dr. Vanessa Lapointe is an author, parenting educator, and registered psychologist who has been supporting families and children for more than fifteen years. She is the author of Discipline without Damage: How to get your kids to behave without messing them up, a regularly invited media guest and contributor, educator and speaker, a Huffington Post Parent blogger, and a consultant to research projects and various organizations promoting emotional health and development. Dr. Vanessa’s passion is in walking alongside parents, teachers, care providers, and other big people to really see the world through the child’s eyes. She is a mother to 2 growing children.

Our office is excited to share our brand new 2018 FRPBC Brochure and ACEs Summit Poster. We encourage you to download the brochure and share it among your program participants, visitors and networks. We are also proud to raise awareness on Adverse Childhood Experiences, and how FRPs can play a role.
In November, we attended the 2-day event with another 600 Doctors, Clinicians, Community and Police. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) ACEs, is a term that refers to a 20-year-old study determining what happens when we are younger affects our health as adults.
We presented the case for Health Outcomes of Positive Experiences (HOPE), and how FRPs play a role in connection, the first factor to stop Adverse Childhood Experiences. We presented a poster and an updated FRP-BC brochure which can be downloaded below. We are excited to continue building awareness of ACEs and how HOPE at family resource programs can play a role.
